Tour of a Digital Fife Web Page
Digital Fife websites share the same basic layout. This section explains the features you will usually see on every page, and what they are for.
Accessibility bar
All Digital Fife sites include an accessibility bar at the very top of the page. This is a set of quick controls that can help visitors change how the site looks, for example increasing text size or adjusting contrast.
Banner
Most sites use a banner image at the top of the page. Banners display on every page. A banner can help communicate what the group is about at a glance. A banner should be clear and not too busy. You will need to choose an image uploaded to your library for both desktop and mobile banners. The site has some basic tools in the library to create a banner or you can upload your own. The width of the banner should be 1600px.
Navigation
Your site navigation is the set of links people use to move around your website. Digital Fife sites usually use either:
- Horizontal navigation across the top of the page, below the banner, or
- Vertical navigation down the left-hand side.
The navigation shows the pages you have chosen to display in your menus. Changing the navigation changes what visitors can click on to find information, but it does not delete or remove pages from your website.
The navigation style and colours can be changed in the site admin area.
On mobile devices the navigation bar is reduced to a menu button with three lines in the top right corner.
Page content area
This is the main part of the page where your information sits. Most updates you make as an editor are changes to the content area, such as updating text, adding a photo, or adding a document link.
Footer
The footer is the section at the bottom of the page. It often contains useful links such as contact details, social media links, accessibility information, or a small logo. Like the banner, the footer usually appears on every page so information is consistent.
The control panel
When you are logged in, you will see a control panel along the bottom of the screen. This is only visible to editors.
Each of these options controls a different part of how your website works;
- Home
Home takes you back to the main editor start page.
- Log in / out
When you log in as an editor, you gain access to additional menus and options that allow you to build, edit and manage your site. If you are editing a website or page that is already live, any changes you make to pages will appear immediately on the public site. If you need to work on a page without the public seeing it, you can hide the page or widget while it is under construction.
- Edit on / off
Edit on allows you to add or edit the content of a page, including text, images, and other page elements. If you want to make changes to a page and you cannot see any yellow labels on the page, this is the first thing to check. Edit off lets you view the page normally.
- Page Settings
Page Settings controls how a page is laid out, for example how many columns it has. It does not control where the page appears in the site menu.
- New Page
New Page is used when you want to create a brand new page. You can create as many pages as you like. These pages are linked together through the main navigation menu or via links within other pages. You can find a complete list of all pages under Admin, then List of All Pages. You can also move content from one page to another.
- Menus
Menus control the site navigation. Adding or removing a button from a menu does not add or remove the page itself.
- Library
The Library is where all images and documents must be uploaded first.
- Admin
Admin contains more advanced options, including the full list of all pages on the site.
